The deadline for the Ohio Board of Nursing license renewal was Monday, August 31, 2009. I have already received two inquiries from RNs who did not renew their license and continued to practice.
This isn't legal advice, of course but:
1. You cannot practice nursing on a lapsed license; you must renew your license to practice ASAP;
2. Practicing on a lapsed license may subject you to a disciplinary investigation and possible action against your license by the State Nursing Board.
If you are a APRN make sure you renew your certifications also. If you are a APRN with prescriptive authority, make sure you renew (depending on the state) here also. If you have a DEA license, make sure you renew.
Regardless of the state where you practice, make sure you renew your nursing license before it lapses. The deadline for license renewal in Kentucky and Indiana is fast approaching. The deadline for Kentucky and Indiana is October 31, 2009.
If you have to make an affirmative response on your application for renewal, don't wait until the last minute to renew your license. Just a suggestion. Don't fudge on your answers either. If you are questioning whether or not to self-disclose or report, contact a nursing law, license defense, health care law, or administrative law attorney in your state.
