Now that HB 556 has passed out of the House Health and Welfare Committee, it will be voted on by the full House, probably next week. Everyone should now be contacting all Representatives and asking them to support the bill. Remember, there are only a little more than3 weeks left in the Legislative Session.
In previous messages sent out this past week, a summary of the bill was provided. That information is available on the KCNPNM web site under Legislative Updates if you need to review talking points or want to read the summary.
In addition to calling the Legislative Message Line every day (Monday – Friday) to leave a message for ALL Representatives, we need to have ARNPs, nurses, and others talk to their Representatives to ask them to support HB 556. It is important that we count the yes votes to make sure we have the votes to pass the bill out of the House.
You can obtain contact information for Representatives by going to http://www.lrc.ky.gov/. Click on "Who's My Legislator” on the left hand side of the page. Search under House of Representatives for your Representative's contact information. It is perfectly acceptable to call your Representative at home this week end. With the short time available before the vote, this may be the only way to reach them.
We do not need to talk directly to the bill sponsor, Rep Mary Lou Marzian or the co sponsors. Co sponsors are: Representatives K. Hall, T. Burch, T. Couch, C. Hoffman, J. Jenkins, C. Miller, R. Palumbo, C. Siler, J. Stacy, T. Thompson, S. Westrom.
Below is a list of all the Representatives. The sponsor and co sponsors have been highlighted on the list.

TALKING POINTS
Kentucky has 81 federally designated underserved regions.
Passage of HB 566 will increase access to primary care services, because NPs will be able to establish practices in these underserved areas
Over 40 years of research shows that nurse practitioners:
- provide high quality care
- reduce ER visits
- reduce hospitalizations
- improve access to health care services
- reduce health care costs
46% of ARNPs are practicing in rural areas of Kentucky
The number of NPs is increasing and the number of primary care physicians is decreasing.
SB 75 is not about competition among health care providers; it is about removing barriers to health care access, particularly in rural areas of Kentucky

CALL EVERYDAY – The message line is open until 11PM
It is extremely important that Representatives hear from ARNPs, nurses, and the general public. Call each day (Monday – Friday) until further notice and ask others to do the same. Tell the operator that you want to leave your message for your Representative and all Representatives
The message: "I am a Nurse Practitioner (nurse, physician, patient, constituent, etc.). Please support HB 556 to increase access to health care. Please co sponsor this important bill.”
Message line number: 800 372-7181
FAX LETTERS
In addition to your calls, FAX letters to Frankfort to all Representatives asking them to support HB 556. Address your letter to "Dear Representative”. On the fax cover sheet, ask that the letter be distributed to all Representatives. You can use talking points from this message or prevoius messages. Limit your letters to one page.
Frankfort fax number: 502 564-6543
PLEASE SHARE ANY FEEDBACKIMPORTANTIf you receive feedback from Representatives on HB 556, please let us know. We are keeping track of the legislator responses.
