I am reading the May 2007 issue of SUCCESS from Home (www.successfromhome.com) . John Fleming who authored the article "Way of the Future" quotes a Fortune magazine cover story which stated "Forget the paycheck; your W-2 days are over. Its a 1099 world now."
Do you agree with this statement? Being self-employed can be scary at times because you don't have a "steady" paycheck but its exciting to have control over your career. When I graduated from law school, I assumed I would work in a large law firm, eventually make partner, and live happily ever after. I know it sounds corny but I didn't have a clue when I graduated from law school in 1997. I was clerking with law firms and working as a nurse at a large teaching hospital and I thought it couldn't be that bad working full-time in a law firm.
I never in a million years would have thought that I would have my own law firm and consulting firm and be self-employed when I graduated from law school. I have to tell you this story.
When I decided to leave the large law firm where I worked, my grandmother asked me if I was crazy. I replied No, I am not happy. She laughed and told me that it doesn't matter if you are not happy at work as long as you are making alot of money. I want to be happy and I have to love what I do for a living. Its "All or Nothing" for me with life, love, and career.
I am happy with my career. If I wake up one day and I am not happy with my career, I will do something about it! That's just me.
It is a 1099 world for me at this point in my career. The majority of my income is derived from my law firm although I still receive a W-2 as an employee of Interim Healthcare in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Is it a 1099 world or W-2 world for you? Are you happy?
